How to Improve Home Wi-Fi Speed and Connectivity

There’s nothing quite as frustrating as a webpage or online stream buffering for what seems like an eternity. The spinning wheel in the centre of your screen is often down to a poor Internet connection which can be affected by anything from file sizes to the weather conditions. While it is infuriating, it’s not always down to your Internet provider and there are some ways to improve home Wi-Fi speed and connectivity without having to switch.

A lot of older properties, especially those made from solid stone and built in rural locations, are often affected by poor broadband speeds that can make it possible to obtain a signal in some parts of the home but not others. Similarly, you can find that connecting to the Internet is affected by different devices or even the time of day that you’re trying to log-on.

In the latest of our articles we’re going to explain how to improve home Wi-Fi speed and connectivity using a number of relatively quick and inexpensive – but highly effective methods that will enable you to stream live TV, send larger files via email and play online games far more efficiently than you can right now.

How can I improve my Wi-Fi speed and connection at home?

There are a number of options available when it comes to ways in which you can improve your Wi-Fi speed and connection, and they all come down to the quality of the signal in and around your home and the budget you have available.

It would be very easy for us to suggest that you just rip out the system from your current provider and fit a BT Whole Home Wi-Fi system (more on that shortly), but for those on a tight budget the easiest solution may just be to fit a Wi-Fi extender.

Extenders and dongles are excellent option for those looking for inexpensive or mobile Wi-Fi solutions, but if you’re looking for a way to improve the speed and connection throughout your home then Whole Home Wi-Fi is the perfect answer.

With three discs spread around your home you can eliminate ‘deadspots’ where you frequently lose the connection or suffer from decreased speeds. It doesn’t matter how many devices you have on the network either, meaning that you can be on your laptop in the living room trying to finish your work while your son or daughter is streaming video in their bedroom and your partner is browsing the web on their tablet.

The clever bit about BT Whole Home Wi-Fi is that it knows where you are in the home, and where your devices are. By finding this out they can switch from one disc to another to ensure that you have the strongest possible signal at all times for an uninterrupted connection. You can find out more about the system or even place your order for Whole Home Wi-Fi online today.

What is a Wi-Fi extender and how does it work?

If you don’t feel the need to install a completely new system, or if you don’t have the money, a Wi-Fi extender is the next best option.

The extender plugs into a socket in your home and is linked to your wireless router. It will then help to extend not only the reach of your Wi-Fi but it will also enable you to connect more devices without slowing it down.

This system will also let you find out the best places to position your devices for optimum Internet connections so that you can stream video, download music and browse the web with ease.

  1. I have bt infinity and a home hub5 + 1 bt extender. I am considering up grading to the new bt smart hub but am also interested in Whole Home Wi-Fi. Does the latter replace the hub and, if not, what, if any, advantage would there be in doing both?

    1. Whole Home Wi-Fi will work with your Home Hub5, you do not need to upgrade to the Smart Hub if you’re using Whole Home Wi-Fi.
